Gallery Information

Mandarin is a modest gallery space showing exceptional artists. The focus of Mandarin’s program is two-fold: Abstract painting and Conceptual Art. Richard Allen Morris has been painting since the early ’60s and has a few retrospectives under his belt. James Hayward has been showing since the late ’70s. The younger generation includes up and coming painters, like Daniel Mendel-Black and Olivia Booth. Each painter is interested in chance and explores materials intensely. David Askevold, well known for his experimental video and photo-text work in the late ’60 and ’70’s, continues to make stellar work – in whatever media he chooses. His sense of humor and continued fascination with subtleties and slippages (both visual and linguistic) are ever present. Goody-B. Wiseman, a student of Askevold’s, has a dark sensibility. She works with a persona and hones language to make engaging, psychologically loaded work, which is direct and fierce and usually funny. She was chosen for the Orange County Biennial, which is up through January 2007.
