Gallery Information
1301PE (originally 1301) was founded in 1992 at 1301 Franklin Street in Santa Monica. From 1992 through 1995, 1301 concentrated on the representation of a small group of emerging artists. In 1995, finding the confines of an exhibition
schedule too limiting to the desired ideals, 1301 closed the gallery space to concentrate on working with artists in a freer format. This was the evolution from 1301 to 1301PE. This new spirit of 1301PE was first seen with 1301PE presents Angela Bulloch at Marc Foxx and Jason Rhoades Blue Room and Love Seat. This was followed by RANCH a collaboration by Jorge Pardo and Jason Rhoades. The carpet project, an on-going project with Iranian carpet weavers, in 1997 produced its first of two designs by Mike Kelley. Future projects include proposals by Rirkrit Tiravanija, Chris Wool and AA Bronson. In 1998, 1301PE’s need to have a more permanent home lead to the establishment of 1301PE at 6150 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. Since 1998, 1301PE has continued work on various projects while also mounting critically acclaimed exhibitions including “Together again like never before: the complete poster work of Michael Asher and Martin Kippenberger”, the first presentation of AA Bronson, the sole survivor of General Idea, work “Felix, June 5, 1994”, the presentation of Jorge Pardo and Philippe Parreno’s collaboration, the first one person exhibition in the United States of Ann Veronica Janssens and Liliana Moro, and the first American presentation of “Social Pudding” the collaboration between Rirkrit Tiravanija + SUPERFLEX.
