Larry Fink & Joel-Peter Witkin
| |
Larry
Fink, under the early tutelage of Lisette Model,
developed a unique and offbeat style of empathetic reportage.
With his distinct visual and political perspective,
he has explored the under-belly of human interaction
in all its glory and demise. His celebrated body of
work Social Graces was the subject of a solo
exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in
1979, and explores the dichotomies and intricacies of
the social circles amongst high-class Manhattanites
and the working class of rural Pennsylvania. Using a
hand-held flash, Fink's unique vision catches his subjects
off-guard and allows the viewer glimpses of often humorous,
but never underhanded, social interactions. Social
Graces has recently been re-issued for the first
time since 1984 by Powerhouse Books. Additional books
include Runway, an exploration of the behind-the-scenes
world of fashion, and Boxing, a rich depiction of the
blue-collar roots of the sport. Fink has exhibited widely
in galleries and museums in the U.S. and abroad, including,
SF MoMa; Louvre Museum, Paris; and more; and solo exhibitions
at the Whitney, MoMA and Les Rencontres de Photographie,
Arles, France. His work is in the collections of MoMA;
the Smithsonian; Houston Museum of Fine Arts; Los Angeles
County Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum; the Whitney
Museum of American Art; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris;
and more. Fink is also a two-time recipient of the NEA
and Guggenheim fellowships.

|
| |
Joel-Peter
Witkin is the recipient of numerous NEA fellowships
and was awarded the Commander of the Legion of Honor,
Paris. His uniquely dark and evocative representations
of the human figure have been exhibited worldwide, including
the Museum of Modern Art New York, Guggenheim, The Whitney
Museum, and San Francisco museum of Modern Art.
